Introduction:
Attention Grabber:
(Play Clip) When athletes get hurt like this, increasingly, they are turning to a new therapy recovery. Have you heard of tennis player Rafael Nadal? He’s the biggest fan of a stem cell therapy. In 2013, Rafael Nadal was forced out of tennis action for seven months due to a knee problem but following stem cell therapy… he was able to return to glory.
Thesis:
Relate (Probe)
Close your eyes…who is someone you love dearly. Imagine that they have a life limiting ailment. If you could offer a treatment that could provide a cure or relief would you? I know I would.
State:
Today, I’d like to invite you to consider stem cell therapy as a cure for disease.

“Stem cell research can revolutionize medicine, more than anything since antibiotics.” Guess who said this? Ronald Reagan President of the United States from 1981 to 1989. Maybe it’s time we allow the revolution to begin.

What is Stem Cell therapy?

Types
Source: In 2022 Texas Partners Healthcare Group featured n their research the four types of stem cells; There are 4 types of the stem cells” and Each Type of Stem Cells Helps Improve People’s Lives Found in every single organ and tissue in the body, stem cells are vital to our overall functionality. These naturally occurring cells don’t just assist in the development of various types of tissue, but they can promote healing and support the body in numerous constructive ways. They work hard to replenish the body’s network of specialized cells that have either been damaged or used up. Stem cells are essentially human cells that can turn into many different kinds of cells. According to the group (2004) Scientists find them in the following: Bone marrow, Brain, Blood vessels, Skin and teeth, Heart, Gut, Liver. The Stem cells types are: Embryonic stem cells. These types of stem cells are pluripotent (they can differentiate into any other type of cell found in the body) and are obtained from the blastocyst. Tissue-specific stem cells. Also referred to as adult stem cells or somatic stem cells, tissue-specific stem cells are more specialized than the above. Induced pluripotent stem cells. Scientists develop these cells in a lab and reprogram them into a more specialized kind of cell, similar to how embryonic stem cells function. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) – You can find these cells in the connective tissue that encompasses the body’s many tissues and organs.

Milestones
Source: In 2019 Stem Med Cellular Laboratory wrote a history and timeline of the beginning stem cell era. The term ‘stem cell’ can traced back to 1868 when German biologist, Ernst Haeckel used it to describe a fertilized egg and how the single-celled organism acted as the ancestor cell to all living things in history. In 1909, Russian academic Alexander Maximow introduced the idea of blood stem cells that are multi-potent, or have the ability to differentiate into several types of cells. There have been many milestones through the course of stem cell research. One of the most remarkable advancements was in 1957 when the first human bone marrow transplant was attempted by Dr. Edward Donnall Thomas, a physician-scientist working in Seattle at the time who later on won the Nobel Prize in 1990 for this particular work. A hundred years after the term was coined, Dr. Robert A. Good performed the first successful bone marrow transplant, following the work of Dr Thomas, on a child patient suffering from an immune deficiency that killed others in his family in 1968. The boy received bone marrow from his sister, and continued to live to healthy adulthood. In 2006, Shinya Yamanaka from Kyoto University in Japan revealed breakthrough in making embryonic-like cells from adult cells, avoiding any ethical dilemma stemming from the need to destroy an embryo. Being able to reprogram ordinary adult cells by inserting 4 key genes, he was able to form what is known today as ‘induced pluripotent stem cells’. Through the years, stem cell research has made tremendous advancements. In 2010, as part of a trial, Geron of Menlo Park, California, was the first to treat a patient with spinal injury utilizing a medical treatment derived from human embryonic stem cells.

How Can Stem cell therapy cure?
In life, there are always more than one perspective, let’s consider… that there can be positive and negative side.
Hurts
Source: What challenges have to be overcome before the stem cell potential in cell therapy is realized? One of its primary limitations is in the method of administration. Bone marrow cells may be pumped into the bloodstream and eventually reach the bone marrow. Other stem cells, such as muscle stem cells, brain stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells, have a more difficult route of administration in patients. One additional obstacle is rejection. There is a need to worry about the patient’s immune system rejecting the stem cells if they are taken from the patient themselves. However, according to (Wang et al., 2021), the receiver’s immune may reject the cells when using donor stem cells unless medications subdue the immune system. This is the case when using stem cells that have been donated. There is an additional challenge to face in bone marrow transplantation. Immune cells that came from the donor are found in the bone marrow. These will launch an assault on the recipient’s tissues, leading to graft-versus-host disease, which may be fatal in certain cases.

Source: Stem cell therapy is currently being researched for its use in treating a variety of orthopedic, in?ammation, autoimmune, and neurological diseases, including Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, lupus, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and stroke recovery, amongst others. According to Dr. Sairam Alturi stem cells has such benefits as effective pain reduction , boosts functionality and movements in different parts of the body, Minimal recovery times, Non-invasive treatment that does not compromise on efficacy, Could help to reverse complex injuries, Could prevent nerve damage.
